Discussion:
Duplication in OE Folders

I have Win98 SE, OE6 and IE6

Nearly all of the files in my Local Folders in OE are duplicated, some
six times and I am in the process of tidying them up. How can I prevent
a repetition. I think it happens when I do a backup of my .dbx files,
but I am not sure about that.

Thanks,
Emrys Davies.

Do you mean that you have DBX files with the same names except for
appended numbers such as (1) (2) (3)?

When OE has a problem with a DBX file it will create a new one with the
next number and abandon the previous one.

The one with the highest number is likely the active one. You can
double check by looking at the last modified date.

If you suspect that problem occurs during backup, make sure that OE is
closed when you do the backup.

When I open a folder in Local Folders I find that the files are
duplicated, sometimes twice or as many as six times. I have just
finished deleting the duplicated ones

For example I have the following files in a folder named 'Outlook
Express Backup':

Jim Pickering 22.10.05 00:19
Jim Pickering 22.10.05 00:19
Jim Pickering 22.10.05 00:19
Jim Pickering 22.10.05 00:19

There are quite a few other files in this folder and all of them are
similarly duplicated. I will keep these for the time being for
reference, but they will not copy and paste for your perusal.

I'm not clear on what you are seeing.

You mention a folder named 'Outlook Express Backup': is that a Windows
folder or a folder within Outlook Express?

If a Windows folder, what type of files are you seeing? I'm guessing
you have hidden file extensions. If so Right click a file and look at
the properties. Are these name EML files? But Windows shouldn't allow
multiple files with the exact same file name in a folder.

If these are messages in an OE folder, then you can have duplicates.

If you repeatedly Copy (not Move or Drag) messages from one OE folder to
another, that will do it.

There are also some issues where downloading messages from a mail server
may cause duplicates.

What sort of procedure are doing for backups?
